August Musings

After a long summer, The Raw and the Cooked is back on Wednesday, Aug 27th at 9pm. Performers will include "raw" performance by: Mark Drahozal, Ted Johnson, Leah Nelson, Marion Ramirez, Jung Woong Kim, Johnny Butler, Ryan Snow, Jake Wise, Kenny Auyeung, Adam Schniet, Ezra Tenenbaum, and Jake Jeffries; and a little something "cooked" by myself and Hannah Verrill. This show will take place at DCTV, third floor.

As a side, I would like to mention that there is going to be quite an interesting performance this Sunday, Aug 31st at the Manhattan Children's Theater (52 White Street) by Irina Danilova. She will be shaving her head as part of a series of shavings that occur every four years. The performance will include live video mixing and some other surprises. For her services and insight, Ms. Danilova will be charging $5.99. I don't know about you, but I am intrigued...

The Tank moves to DCTV, and other stuff

So it's nearing the end of the long month of August, which proved to be an eventful one for The Tank. The infamous mold and sewage issue that was "hush hush" a month ago has now become another anecdote in the saga of The Tank's history. We have moved on to greener pastures (see image left)

DCTV (www.dctvny.org) is a funky firehouse on Lafayette Street and White Street. It has a really cool raw space on the ground level. We are fixing it up with some lights and I am even looking into some portable dance floor options. It could really fix up quite nicely.

The next The Raw and the Cooked is at 9pm on Wednesday, Aug 27th at DCTV. There will be some brand new people, and some old faces, as always.

I have been laboriously trying up upload the videos from Improvisers 16 to 30 for nearly a month. No internet connection is quite fast enough for the file transfer... all in due time.

April 17th, Reflections

I have to say I was extremely pleased with both the product and process on thursday night. We tried a new structure, which allowed improvisers more freedom to choose when to participate, while still maintaining a linear direction. The group seemed comfortable from the start, creating a welcoming atmosphere for both one another and the audience... Okay, but enough of my glowing comments. This is a place to reflect on what worked as well as what didn't, and I hope fruitful dialogue can be had.

Video will be up soon!

Thoughts for March to get the ball rolling...

I've been thinking about how to create larger dynamic range in texture. I think "three" is a good number for this, musically and dancer-wise. With three people there is the option for solo, duet and trio, as well as two-against-one. I think it may be fruitful to talk strategy within disciplines about this when the groups meet. While there are overarching structures that can tie the group together, it could be helpful to acknowledge specific concerns pertaining to musicians and dancers alone. Here are some things that I noticed, which might be interesting to consider:

-not a lot of eye contact between dancers; internal focus
-internal movement (does this make sense?)
-sensitivity to sound as visceral component of movement
-"agreement" with sound... what would disagreement or counterpoint look like?
-movement starts small at the beginning of the improvisation, and develops conventional arc, or stays texturally flat; how to develop?
-endings unclear; how to end? is it okay for one person to take the initiative? does it need to be a group consensus? how is the end determined?
